Buying or Hiring a Portaloo: Compare Ownership Costs

Buying and hiring provide different responsibilities. A purchase price is not a complete ownership budget, and a weekly hire figure is not the complete booking cost.

Start with how often you will use it

List the projects or events where you expect to need the toilet and the gaps between them. Occasional use may leave an owned unit needing storage and maintenance for long periods. Regular use still needs transport, servicing and a way to respond to faults.

Avoid a universal break-even month. It depends on the actual purchase quote, hire terms, service costs and how many useful days you get from the unit.

What costs come with ownership?

Allow for delivery or transport equipment, storage, cleaning, consumables and repairs. A self-contained toilet also needs an appropriate waste-removal arrangement. Ownership does not permit disposal into stormwater or onto land.

Check the equipment's condition and suitability before buying. Used units may need fittings or tanks repaired, and the model needs to suit the site and users.

What should you compare in a hire quote?

Our standard construction hire includes fortnightly servicing and has a 28-day minimum. Weekly or additional service visits are extra, and delivery and collection are separate. Event and trailer products have different minimums and do not include ongoing servicing by default.

Use the current hire prices for the actual products, then compare the full term you need. Do not multiply an event extra-day rate by its minimum period: the event minimum is a flat price.

Who handles the practical work?

Consider who will move the unit safely, keep it clean, arrange waste removal and deal with a breakdown. For a sewer-connect model, include plumbing work and routine hygiene even though it does not need holding-tank pump-outs.

Make the comparison for your use

Compare the total expected ownership cost over a realistic period with complete hire quotes for that same use. Include downtime and storage instead of assuming the toilet is continuously productive.
