Underground power connections are the preferred choice for building sites where overhead cables are not practical or where council requirements mandate below-ground infrastructure. In newer estates across South East Queensland, the electricity network runs underground rather than on traditional overhead poles, meaning a standard overhead temporary supply is not an option. Our underground TBS installations connect your temporary power pole directly to the Energex underground pillar via a concealed cable run, with all conduit work and cable protection handled by our team. One of our licensed electricians attends to check the pillar is set up correctly for the pole and make the connections good, and Energex then makes the connection to the pole. The work is compliant with Energex requirements and AS/NZS 3000 wiring standards.

What is an underground power pole?

In newer residential estates and developments where the electricity network runs underground, a standard overhead temporary power connection isn’t possible. Our underground power pole service provides the solution: we install a temporary pole near the Energex underground pillar and run a cable connection below ground level.

Every underground installation is supervised by a licensed electrical contractor, who manages the cable connection between our temporary pole and the Energex pillar. The installation complies with AS/NZS 3000 wiring standards, and we lodge the EWR with Energex.

Underground connections require additional materials and labour compared to overhead installations, and this is reflected in the pricing. The hire fee covers the pole hardware, underground cable, delivery, installation, 12 weeks of rental, and removal. The electrician’s supervision fee is invoiced separately based on travel time and specific site requirements.

Safety & Compliance

Underground connections need extra safety measures, and one of our licensed electricians attends the pillar to meet Energex and council requirements.

  • Our licensed electrician attends the pillar connection
  • AS/NZS 3000 compliant underground cable installation
  • EWR lodged with Energex for underground connection
  • Cable route clearly marked and protected
  • Compliant with local council underground power requirements

Underground poles can only be installed within 1 metre of the Energex pillar. They can be installed further away, but it's the hirer's and their electrical contractor's responsibility to adjust the cable length and installation accordingly — please confirm current requirements with Energex.

Quote review

We assess the location of the Energex pillar and plan the cable route. Underground connections must be within 1 metre of the pillar.

Pole & Cable Install

Site specific

Our crew installs the underground pole and runs the cable to the Energex pillar. Our licensed electrician attends to check the pillar is set up correctly for the pole and to make the connections good.

3

Energex Connects The Pole

Provider timing

Your retailer processes the service order. The network connection is then scheduled separately by the relevant provider, which connects the underground service cable into the street pillar. This is the network connection — not yet live power at the meter.

Retailer Installs The Meter

Provider timing

Your retailer or metering provider controls this appointment. Power only starts flowing once the meter is in.

Underground power pole hire FAQs

What is an underground temporary power connection?
An underground connection is used in estates where the electricity network runs below ground rather than on overhead poles. Instead of an overhead service line, we run a cable from the temporary power pole to the Energex underground pillar (pit) in the street.
How close does the pole need to be to the Energex pillar?
The temporary power pole must be installed within 1 metre of the Energex underground pillar. This minimises the cable run and ensures a compliant connection. We assess the pillar location during the site survey.
Why is an underground connection more expensive?
Underground connections require additional cable, trenching or conduit work, and a licensed electrician has to attend the pillar. These factors add to the cost compared to a standard overhead stayed or stayless pole.
Do I need my own electrician for the connection?
No — we send one of our own licensed electricians. They check the Energex pillar is set up correctly for our underground pole and make the connections good, and Energex then makes the connection to the pole. The electrician's fee is invoiced separately based on travel time and site requirements.
Is the underground cable buried or run in conduit?
The cable is typically run through conduit for protection. In some cases, depending on the site and council requirements, it may be directly buried. Our team assesses the best approach during the site survey.
Can I get three-phase underground power?
Yes. We supply underground connections in both single phase and three phase configurations. Three-phase underground installations are available for commercial and industrial sites.
