The right camera package depends on what you need to see and how someone will respond. This is a buying checklist based on the hire options we supply, rather than an independent test or ranking of camera brands.

What makes a good construction site camera?
Start with the job you need the camera to do. You might need a consistent view of a materials area, a record of deliveries at an access point, or a way to look across work in progress. Mark those priorities on a site plan before choosing a location.
Check the view at the distance that matters. A wide overview and a close view of one activity serve different purposes. Ask how buildings, stored materials and vehicles could obstruct the camera as the job progresses. A high resolution figure alone cannot answer those questions.
Camera options for your site
Camera on a hired temporary power pole
Our upcoming option is a fixed camera attached to a Poles & Holes hired temporary power pole. It uses solar and battery power with 4G connectivity and will record events only. It will not provide continuous 24/7 playback.
This option is not yet bookable. Check the temporary-pole camera page for availability before planning around it. Its price and recording retention are not the same as the solar bundle by default.
Standalone solar camera pole
Our available package has a dedicated pole, solar panel and battery, and two cameras. The fixed spot camera covers a chosen priority area, such as a gate or materials store. The pan/tilt camera lets you look across the wider site.
Both cameras record continuously, 24/7, with event recording and 10-day playback. Download footage you need to keep before it is deleted. The solar camera product page contains the package details and current hire price. Cameras are not hired individually.
More than one camera view
Do not assume one pole can see around a completed wall or a stack of materials. Send the site layout and the areas that matter when requesting a quote. We can review sightlines, sunlight and mobile signal with you before agreeing on the setup.
What to look for in a camera hire package
- Power and connection: confirm suitable sunlight and 4G signal at the proposed position. Our solar bundle needs neither mains power nor site Wi-Fi.
- Recording and playback: ask whether it records continuously or only when an event is detected, how long footage remains available, and how to download it.
- Useful views: confirm which area the fixed camera covers and what the pan/tilt view can show.
- App access and response: decide who will check alerts and act on them. Our hire does not include staffed monitoring.
- Total hire terms: compare the minimum term, GST, delivery and any agreed work beyond the standard setup.
Ask for a practical explanation of the night view and app controls. Our two-way audio feature lets you speak through the camera; it does not establish what audio is recorded or settle the site's recording obligations.
Construction site cameras and permanent CCTV
A completed building may already have fixed power and network cabling. A changing construction site may need an independent power supply and a camera position reviewed as work progresses. Compare those conditions before deciding whether a temporary hire package fits your project.

Is a camera suitable for this build?
Think about the periods when the site is empty, the areas you want recorded and who can respond. Cameras can provide a record of visible activity. They do not physically secure a gate, recover equipment or guarantee that an incident will be prevented.

What should I check about privacy and recording?
Before installation, agree on the intended views, who has app access and how downloaded footage will be handled. Raise any neighbouring properties or shared access areas when planning the position. Confirm recording settings and site requirements with the person responsible for your project's compliance.
Do not infer audio-recording settings from the presence of a microphone or speaker. Ask about the actual package if audio matters to your decision.
Arranging delivery and installation
Send the site address, preferred start date and areas you need to watch. We check access and the proposed camera position, then confirm the quote and installation arrangements. Availability is confirmed for the job; this guide does not promise a same-day or 48-hour installation.
After setup, check app access and agree who will download important footage. Contact us if the view or sunlight changes during the build, and arrange collection when the hire is finished.
