The short answer to the second question is yes, and the reason is worth understanding before you pick a camera type, because the power and connectivity decision is the one that actually matters on a build. How do construction site security cameras work?
A construction site security camera detects motion, records the event to a card in the unit and to cloud storage, sends an alert with a snapshot to your phone, and streams live when you open the app. Three things make that chain work: a power source, a connection, and somewhere to put the footage.
Take those in order, because every difference between camera types comes down to one of the three.
Power is either mains, drawn from a temporary power pole once the site has one, or a solar panel charging a battery in the unit. Nothing else is practical on a live build.
Connectivity is a 4G SIM inside the camera, or the site's own Wi-Fi where an always-on router already exists. On most builds it is 4G.
Storage is split. Footage is written locally in the camera and uploaded to the cloud, so a stolen or smashed unit does not take the evidence with it.
The motion detection is what keeps all three sustainable. A camera that recorded continuously would fill its storage, chew through mobile data, and on a solar unit flatten the battery.
Do construction site security cameras need Wi-Fi?
No. A 4G construction site camera carries its own SIM and needs no site internet at all, which is why most South East Queensland sites use 4G rather than Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi only enters the picture once the site has a powered, always-on connection, which on a typical residential build does not exist until very late, if ever.
This is the single most common misconception we correct on the phone. People assume a camera needs internet the way a laptop does, and that the site therefore needs a connection before security is possible. It does not. The camera is closer to a mobile phone than to a desktop computer.
The practical consequence is that a camera can go up on day one, on a bare block, before the slab is poured and before the power pole is in the ground. That first fortnight is when a site is at its most exposed, because there is nothing on it yet except the materials that just arrived.
Are 4G construction site cameras reliable in Brisbane and SEQ?
4G construction cameras are reliable across the large majority of South East Queensland, including the growth corridors where most builds are happening. Ripley, Springfield, Yarrabilba, Caboolture, Coomera and Redland Bay all sit on solid mobile coverage. The exceptions are genuine blackspots, mainly deep-valley hinterland sites and some remote rural addresses west of the range.
Signal is the one variable worth checking before you commit, because a camera on a weak connection uploads slowly and alerts late, which defeats the point of having it. Coverage maps are drawn at a level of detail that does not tell you much about one specific block, so we work from the exact site address rather than the suburb.

How do solar powered construction site cameras work when it is cloudy?
A solar construction camera runs off a battery that the panel recharges during daylight, so it keeps working through overcast weather rather than switching off when the sun goes in. A correctly sized panel is matched to overcast winter conditions, not to ideal summer sun, which is what gives it the headroom to ride out a wet week.
The variable that catches people out is not rain, it is shade. A panel that never sees direct sun, because a building has gone up beside it or a tree overhangs it, will not recharge properly no matter how good the weather is. If your site is going to lose sun as the structure rises, the cleaner answer is to switch the camera to mains power from your temporary power pole hire, which we can do inside the same hire rather than making you sign a second contract.
Can I install a CCTV camera without Wi-Fi?
Yes, and on a construction site it is the normal way to do it. A 4G camera connects straight to the mobile network, so there is no router to set up, no cable to run and no internet account to open. You get live view and motion alerts on your phone, exactly as you would at home.
The two things a camera without Wi-Fi still needs are power and a mount. Power comes from either a self-contained solar panel and battery, or from mains once your temporary power pole is energised. The mount is a fence post, a dedicated camera pole, or the power pole itself.

Which CCTV camera is better, wifi or wired?
Neither is better outright, it depends on what the site already has. A wired camera is the most reliable option where mains power and a fixed internet connection already exist. A Wi-Fi camera suits a site that already has a powered, always-on router. On a construction site, neither condition is usually met in the first weeks of the job.
So on a live build the honest answer is normally 4G: on mains from the power pole where one exists, and on solar where it does not. Wired wins on pure reliability and always will, but it is not available to you until the building is finished, at which point the site camera is coming down anyway.
Ranked on reliability the order is wired, then 4G, then Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi lands last on a building site because it depends on a router in a shed, and the shed gets switched off.
Do security cameras record all the time?
Not usually. Most construction site cameras record on motion rather than continuously, because continuous recording consumes storage and mobile data without adding much value on a site that is empty for sixteen hours a day. Motion-triggered recording captures the events that matter, sends an alert when something moves, and keeps the footage searchable instead of hours of empty frames.
Continuous recording is available where a job genuinely needs it. The trade-off is more data, more storage and, on a solar unit, a real hit to battery headroom through a run of overcast days.

Is 2K or 4K better for security cameras?
Higher resolution is only better if the connection can carry it and the storage can hold it. 4K produces a sharper image when you zoom into footage, but it consumes far more data and storage than 2K. On a 4G-connected construction camera that trade-off matters, because the footage travels over a mobile connection rather than fixed broadband.
The practical rule is that placement beats resolution nearly every time. A camera mounted at the right height, aimed at the gate and the material stack rather than at the whole block, will give you usable identification at a lower resolution than a higher-specification unit pointed vaguely at the site.
Which camera type survives a Queensland storm?
All three types survive a Queensland storm if the unit is specified for outdoor site conditions, but they fail differently. A wired camera loses its feed if the cable is damaged or the power drops. A Wi-Fi camera drops out the moment the site shed loses power. A 4G camera on solar keeps running on battery.
That is the real argument for 4G and solar in a Brisbane wet season. The camera is at its most useful precisely when the site is at its most vulnerable, which is during and immediately after a storm, when the site is empty, access is easy and nobody is watching.
Wind is the other consideration, and it is a mounting question rather than a camera question. A unit on a dedicated pole or an existing power pole rides out weather far better than one strapped to a loose fence panel.
What makes solar cost more than mains 4G to hire?
A solar camera costs more per week than a mains-powered 4G camera because you are hiring more hardware: the panel, the battery and the heavier mounting needed to carry both. A mains unit draws power from a pole that is already on site, so the hire is the camera and the mount alone.

Our recommendation by site type
Match the camera to the stage the site is at, not to the specification sheet. A bare block with no pole takes solar and 4G. A site with an energised temporary power pole takes a mains 4G camera on the pole. A fitout or a warehouse with an always-on router can take Wi-Fi.
- New residential build, pre-slab: solar and 4G on a dedicated pole. Nothing else works on day one.
- Residential build, pole energised: mains 4G mounted on the power pole. Cheaper, and no dependence on sunlight.
- Civil or open site: multiple 4G units, placed by sightline rather than by boundary length.
- Fitout or warehouse: Wi-Fi is viable if the router is genuinely always on. Confirm that before relying on it.
- Rural or hinterland block: check signal at the exact address before booking anything.
