Solar and 4G security cameras exist for one reason: the first few weeks of a build have no power and no internet, and that is exactly when the site is worth robbing.

Which setup suits your site: solar or mains, 4G or Wi-Fi

The right setup is decided by what the site already has, not by the camera. No power and no internet takes a self-contained solar unit on 4G. A live temporary power pole takes a mains-powered 4G camera mounted on the pole. An established site office with an always-on router can take Wi-Fi, which on a live build is rare.

  • Bare block, pre-slab: solar and 4G on a dedicated camera pole. Nothing else works on day one.
  • Pole in and energised: mains 4G on the power pole. Cheaper, and no dependence on sunlight.
  • Fitout or warehouse: Wi-Fi is viable if the router is genuinely always on. Confirm that before relying on it.
  • Rural or hinterland: signal is checked at the exact address before we commit.

Cameras mounted on a temporary power pole: the combined hire

Poles and Holes mounts security cameras directly on the temporary power poles we hire out, so one supplier, one delivery and one contract covers both. The camera is fitted during the pole install and draws mains power from the pole, sitting at pole height for a wider view. It starts working once the pole is energised.

That last point matters for your programme. A pole-mounted camera runs off the pole, so it is live only after Energex has connected the supply and your retailer's meter provider has fitted the meter, which is typically five to ten business days after install plus the retailer's own visit. If you need the site watched before then, the standalone solar unit is the one that works from day one, because it depends on nothing the site has yet.

That is the genuine differentiator here, and it is also the cheaper arrangement: a security camera on a power pole is about $69 a week excluding GST against about $100 for a standalone unit. The pole itself is $600 for its 12 week minimum hire, or $840 for 3-phase. If you need a pole anyway, book temporary power pole hire and the camera together and the camera rides out on the same truck.

Solar and 4G camera specifications

A standalone solar camera pole carries a 90W panel and a 31.2Ah lithium battery running two 4MP cameras: a fixed bullet covering the gate and a pan-tilt that patrols the site. Both shoot 2560 x 1440, see 30 metres in the dark in full colour rather than black and white, and are IP66-rated. Nothing needs mains power, Wi-Fi or cabling.

A pole-mounted camera is the same pan-tilt unit running on mains drawn from your temporary power pole, with the cable secured inside the pole, so there is no panel or battery to size. The trade is that it needs the pole energised before it works, where the solar unit does not.

Sites with no pole: standalone solar camera poles

Where a site has no pole and does not need one for power, we hire a dedicated camera pole instead. It carries its own solar panel, battery and 4G connection, goes into the ground on its own, and works on a bare block from day one with nothing else on site.

Can security cameras work without Wi-Fi?

Yes. A 4G security camera works without Wi-Fi because it carries its own mobile SIM and connects to the mobile network directly. It uploads footage and sends motion alerts over that connection with no site internet, no router and no cabling. This is the standard setup on construction sites, which rarely have internet in the early weeks.

We deliver solar and 4G cameras across South East Queensland from our Capalaba depot. Brisbane, Logan, Redlands, Ipswich and Moreton Bay sit inside the standard 40km zone, where delivery is $390 excluding GST. Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba are extended-zone jobs with travel at $10 per kilometre beyond 40km.

Solar costs more because you are hiring more hardware: the panel, the battery and the heavier mounting to carry both. Where a site will have an energised pole early, the mains option is the better value, and switching from solar to mains partway through a build happens inside the same hire. Can I install a CCTV camera without Wi-Fi?
Yes, you can install a CCTV camera without Wi-Fi, and on a construction site it is the normal way to do it. A 4G camera carries its own mobile SIM and connects straight to the mobile network, so there is no router to set up, no cable to run and no internet account to open. You get live view and motion alerts on your phone through the app, exactly as you would on a home system, except the connection is mobile rather than fixed. The two things a camera without Wi-Fi still needs are power and a mount. Power comes either from a self-contained solar panel and battery, or from mains once your temporary power pole is energised. The mount is a fence post, a dedicated camera pole, or the power pole itself. On a hire we handle the install, so the only thing you organise is the site address.
Can you mount a security camera on a temporary power pole?
Yes, and it is one of the few things we do that nobody else in this market offers as a combined hire. Mounting on the pole gives you two practical advantages over a fence post. The camera sits higher, which widens the field of view and puts it out of easy reach, and it runs on mains power drawn from the pole rather than depending on sunlight or battery capacity. The one thing to plan around is timing: because it draws power from the pole, a pole-mounted camera works only once the supply is energised, not on the day the pole lands. Do 4G construction cameras work everywhere in South East Queensland?
4G construction cameras work across the large majority of South East Queensland, including the growth corridors where most builds are happening: Ripley, Springfield, Yarrabilba, Caboolture, Coomera and Redland Bay all sit on solid mobile coverage. The exceptions are genuine blackspots, mainly deep-valley hinterland sites and some remote rural addresses west of the range, where signal at ground level is marginal even though the coverage map suggests otherwise. Signal is the one variable we check before committing, because a camera on a weak connection uploads slowly and alerts late, which defeats the point of having it. Give us the exact site address when you request the quote and we will confirm coverage at that location rather than at the suburb level, since coverage maps are drawn at a scale that tells you very little about one specific block.
What happens to a solar security camera during the Brisbane wet season?
A correctly sized solar camera is specified to keep running through a Brisbane wet season, because the panel is matched to overcast winter conditions rather than to ideal summer sun. The variable that catches people out is not rain, it is shade: a panel that never sees direct sun, because a building has gone up beside it or a tree overhangs it, will not recharge properly no matter how good the weather is. That is why the install visit includes choosing where the panel points, and why we reposition it as the build changes shape around it. If your site is going to lose sun as the structure rises, the cleaner answer is to switch the camera to mains power from your temporary power pole, which we can do inside the same hire rather than making you sign a second contract.
Should I choose solar or mains power for a site camera?
Choose mains if your temporary power pole is already in and energised, and solar if it is not. That is genuinely the whole decision on most Queensland builds. A mains camera mounted on the pole is the cheaper of the two at about $69 a week excluding GST against about $100 for a standalone solar unit, and it never depends on sunlight. What it does depend on is the supply being live, so it is not the answer for the opening weeks of a build. Solar earns its extra cost in exactly that window: a bare block with no power, where the camera has to work from day one and the pole is still waiting on Energex and a retailer meter.
