Building your own home as an owner builder is one of the most rewarding — and challenging — projects you'll ever take on. Unlike working with a volume builder who handles everything, as an owner builder you're responsible for coordinating every trade, every permit, and every piece of site infrastructure. That includes your temporary power pole.

If this is your first build, the process of getting temporary power to your site can feel overwhelming. This guide breaks it down step by step, so you know exactly what to expect, what it costs, and how to avoid the common mistakes that delay owner builder projects.

What Is a Temporary Power Pole?

A temporary power pole — officially called a Temporary Builder's Supply (TBS) — is a freestanding pole installed on your building site that provides metered electricity during construction. It connects to the Energex overhead network via a service line and includes a meter box, RCD safety switch, and power outlets (typically 2x 15A and 1x 10A) that your trades use throughout the build.

Think of it as your site's electrical backbone. Every trade — from the concreter to the painter — needs power to do their job. The temporary pole provides it safely and compliantly until your permanent power connection is established.

When Do You Need to Organise It?

This is where many owner builders get caught out. You need to book your temporary power pole at least 2-3 weeks before you need power on site. Here's why:

The Energex Form 2 application takes 3-5 business days to process. Then installation needs to be scheduled. If there's a backlog or if your site has unusual access requirements, it can take longer. The number one complaint we hear from owner builders is that they didn't allow enough lead time and their site start was delayed because they had no power.

Pro tip: Book your temporary power pole as soon as your building approval is granted. Even if your site start is a few weeks away, having the pole installed early means power is ready when your first trade arrives.

Choosing the Right Pole Type

There are four main types of temporary power poles available in Brisbane. The right one for your build depends on your site, your power requirements, and your budget:

1. Stayed Power Pole (from $860+GST)

The most common and cost-effective option. Uses metal support stays for stabilisation. Requires approximately 4 metres of clear space around the base. Ideal for standard residential blocks with adequate frontage. This is what most owner builders choose.

2. Stayless Power Pole (from $960+GST)

Self-supporting design with no metal stays. Takes up less space and eliminates trip hazards. Ideal for tight blocks, narrow frontages, or sites where crane truck access is limited. Costs slightly more but worth it if space is tight.

3. Underground Power Pole (from $1,150+GST)

Required for estates and subdivisions with underground power reticulation (no overhead lines). Shorter pole with underground cable connection. If you're building in a newer estate like Springfield, Yarrabilba, or Ripley, this is likely what you need. Check with your developer.

4. Three-Phase Power Pole (from $1,300+GST)

Needed if your build requires three-phase power — typically for commercial projects, large residential builds with three-phase air conditioning, or sites using heavy machinery like tower cranes. Most standard residential builds don't need three-phase.

The Energex Process: What Owner Builders Need to Know

Getting temporary power connected in Brisbane involves Energex (the network distributor). Here's the process:

Step 1 — Book with us. Tell us your site address, what type of build it is, and when you need power. We'll recommend the right pole type.

Step 2 — We submit the Form 2. The Energex Form 2 is the official application for a temporary builder's supply connection. We complete and submit this on your behalf — you don't need to deal with Energex directly.

Step 3 — Energex processes the application. This takes 3-5 business days. Energex checks the proposed connection point and confirms the network can support the load.

Step 4 — We install the pole. Our crew arrives with a crane truck, installs the pole in the ground, fits the meter box and outlets, and runs the lead-in cable. This typically takes 2-3 hours.

Step 5 — Energex connects the service line. An Energex crew attends to connect the overhead (or underground) service line from the network to your pole. Once connected, you have live power.

Step 6 — Build away. Your temporary power pole stays on site for the entire build. When your permanent connection is established and you no longer need temporary power, call us and we'll collect the pole.

Common Owner Builder Mistakes to Avoid

After helping thousands of owner builders across Brisbane, we've seen the same mistakes come up again and again:

Leaving it too late. Book at least 2-3 weeks before you need power. Energex doesn't rush applications regardless of your timeline.

Choosing the wrong pole type. A stayed pole on a tight block creates access problems for the entire build. Conversely, paying for a stayless pole on a large open block is unnecessary. We'll help you choose.

Not checking if you need underground. Many newer estates have underground power only. If you order an overhead pole for an underground estate, it won't work. Check with your developer or council before booking.

Forgetting about site toilets. QLD WHS regulations require toilet facilities on any site where workers are present. Many owner builders focus on power and forget the toilet. We offer package pricing when you bundle both.
