Getting temporary power connected on a Brisbane building site involves several steps, multiple parties, and a process that confuses even experienced builders. Energex controls the grid, but they don't install poles or submit the paperwork for you. That's where we come in.

This guide walks you through every step of the Energex temporary power connection process — from the initial Form 2 application through to the moment your electrician has live power on site. We've connected thousands of building sites across South East Queensland, so we know exactly where the delays happen and how to avoid them.

What Is a Temporary Power Connection?

A temporary power connection (also called a temporary builder's supply or TBS) provides metered mains electricity to a construction site before the permanent house connection is installed. It's a dedicated power pole installed on your property boundary, connected to the Energex overhead network via a service line.

Unlike a generator, a temporary power connection gives you reliable, quiet, metered electricity — exactly the same supply you'd get from a wall socket at home. Your electrician installs a temporary meter board on the pole, and every trade on site can plug in their tools, compressors, and equipment without worrying about fuel, noise complaints, or power fluctuations.

Most residential builds in Brisbane need a temporary power connection from day one. The slab pour, framing, and fit-out stages all require consistent power, and running a generator for months is expensive, noisy, and unreliable.

What Is an Energex Form 2 (and Who Submits It)?

The Energex Form 2 — officially called the Application for Temporary Supply — is the paperwork that requests Energex to connect a service line from their network to your temporary power pole. Without a Form 2, Energex won't send a crew to your site.

The good news: we submit the Form 2 for you, completely free of charge. When you hire a temporary power pole from Poles and Holes, our team handles the entire Form 2 application as part of the service. You don't need to navigate Energex's portal, figure out the NMI details, or chase up processing status — we do all of that.

The Form 2 includes details like the site address, the NMI (National Metering Identifier) if one exists, the location of the pole, the requested supply capacity (typically single-phase 63A for residential), and confirmation that a licensed electrician has installed and certified the metering equipment.

The Step-by-Step Connection Process

Here's exactly what happens from the moment you place your order to the moment you have live power on site.

Step 1: Order Your Temporary Power Pole

Place your order through our online form or call us on (07) 3367 2237. We'll need your site address, expected start date, and whether you need single-phase or three-phase supply. Most residential builds use single-phase. Commercial and industrial sites may need three-phase — your electrician can confirm.

Step 2: We Install the Pole

Our crew delivers and installs a timber power pole on your property boundary, positioned to align with the nearest Energex overhead service line. The pole is augered into the ground to the required depth (typically 1.2-1.5 metres for a standard residential pole) and secured with compacted backfill. Installation usually takes 1-2 hours.

If the pole needs to be positioned where there's existing underground services (water, sewer, gas, Telstra), we'll arrange service locating (Dial Before You Dig) before installation. This is included in our service — we won't dig without confirming it's safe.

Step 3: Your Electrician Installs the Meter Board

Once the pole is in the ground, your electrician mounts a temporary meter board (also called a builder's board or site board) to the pole. This includes the main switch, safety switch (RCD), circuit breakers, and a weather-proof power outlet. Your electrician then issues an Electrical Safety Certificate confirming the installation meets Queensland electrical safety standards.

If you don't have an electrician lined up, we can recommend one. Many of our customers use the same electricians we work with regularly, which helps streamline the process.

Step 4: We Submit the Form 2 to Energex

With the pole installed and the meter board certified, we submit the Form 2 application to Energex on your behalf. This triggers Energex to schedule their crew to run a service line from the nearest network pole to your temporary power pole.

Step 5: Energex Connects the Service Line

Energex typically processes Form 2 applications within 3-5 business days. Their crew will run an overhead service line from the nearest Energex pole to your temporary power pole and connect it to the meter board. In some cases — particularly in new estates where the network is still being built — this can take longer. If there's a delay, we follow up with Energex directly so you don't have to.

Step 6: Meter Activation and Live Power

Once the service line is connected, the meter is activated and you have live power on site. Your electrician can verify everything is working, and your trades can start plugging in. From this point, you're paying for electricity through the meter — just like a normal household connection. The electricity retailer (usually the builder's chosen provider) sends bills based on metered usage.

How Long Does the Whole Process Take?

From the moment you order to having live power on site, the typical timeline is 5-10 business days. Here's the breakdown:

Pole installation: Usually within 1-3 business days of your order, depending on our schedule and your site readiness.

Electrician meter board install: 1-2 days after pole installation (depends on your electrician's availability).

Energex Form 2 processing: 3-5 business days from submission.

The biggest variable is Energex's processing time. During peak building season (September to March), processing can occasionally stretch to 7-10 days. Planning ahead and ordering your pole early is the single best way to avoid delays.

What Does It Cost?

There are two main costs involved in getting temporary power connected:

1. Our Pole Hire (From $860+GST)

Our temporary power pole hire starts from $860+GST for a standard single-phase pole. This covers delivery, installation, the free Form 2 submission, and collection at the end of your build. The pole stays on site for the duration of your project — whether that's 3 months or 12 months — at no additional daily charge. It's a flat-rate hire.

Three-phase poles and poles requiring traffic control (busy roads, state-controlled roads) are priced higher due to the additional equipment and logistics involved.

2. Energex Connection Fee ($527.25)

Energex charges a standard fee of $527.25 (inc GST) for a temporary builder's supply connection. This is paid directly to Energex and covers their crew running the service line and activating the meter. This fee is set by Energex and applies regardless of which pole installer you use.

You'll also need to pay your electrician for the meter board installation — typically $400-800 depending on the board spec and the electrician's rates. So the total all-in cost for a standard residential temporary power connection is roughly $1,800-2,200 including GST.

Traffic Control: When Is It Needed?

If your temporary power pole needs to be installed on a road verge adjacent to a busy road, council or the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) may require a traffic management plan (TMP). This is common on main roads, collector streets, and state-controlled roads.

Traffic control adds cost and lead time. A basic TC setup for a quiet suburban street might add $300-600 to the job. A complex setup on a state-controlled road with TMR-approved traffic management can add $1,000-2,000+. We arrange traffic control as part of our service — you don't need to source it separately.

For most residential builds in suburban Brisbane, traffic control is not required. The pole goes on the property boundary or road verge of a quiet residential street, and no traffic management is needed.

Tips to Speed Up Your Connection

Order your pole 2 weeks before you need power. The most common cause of delays is builders ordering the pole the week they need power. Give yourself a buffer. We can often install within days, but Energex's processing time is out of our control.

Have your electrician ready. The Form 2 can't be submitted until the meter board is installed and certified. If your electrician takes a week to get to site after pole installation, that's a week added to your timeline. Book them in advance so they can attend within a day or two of pole install.

Confirm your site is accessible. If we arrive and can't access the site (locked gates, blocked verge, demolition in progress), the install gets postponed. Make sure we have clear access to the pole location on delivery day.

Check if you need traffic control early. If your site is on a main road, let us know when ordering. TC requires advance booking with a traffic management provider, and last-minute TC arrangements can cause delays and higher costs.

New estates: check Energex network availability. In brand-new estates where the overhead network hasn't been fully built yet, Energex may not be able to connect until their infrastructure is complete. If you're building in a new estate, it's worth confirming with Energex (or asking us to check) whether temporary supply is available before ordering.

What Happens at the End of Your Build?

When your build is complete and you've switched to the permanent house connection, we collect the temporary power pole. Your electrician disconnects the meter board, Energex disconnects the service line, and our crew removes the pole from the ground. Collection is included in your hire cost — there's no additional charge.

Most temporary power poles stay on site for 6-12 months, depending on the build timeline. There's no additional charge for longer hire periods — you pay the same flat rate whether the pole is on site for 3 months or 18 months.
