A 1,300mm deep hole will be dug for the pole footing.

Weather & Access

  • Rain and wet weather can restrict site access and delay installation.
  • Clear, unhindered access to meter areas is required — the energy company may charge for wasted trips.

After the Build

Once permanent power is connected, close your temporary account with your retailer and call us for pole pickup.

Need to completely remove the connection?

If the wires on the temporary pole are not being transferred to a permanent supply, the account holder must request a “Supply Abolishment” through their electricity retailer. Once the wires and meter have been removed from the temporary pole, contact Poles and Holes and we will arrange off-hire and pickup.

⚠ Important: Premises must be vacant on removal day. Do not begin demolition until Energex confirms in writing that the removal of the service line is complete.

Need a permanent solution?

Once your build is complete, you may need a permanent private power pole installed or an existing one replaced. We also offer permanent power pole installation with Energex approved galvanised steel power poles engineered for 50+ year lifespans.

Temporary Power Pole Hire FAQs

Common questions about getting power to your site.

How do Poles & Holes know to pick up the pole at the end of the job?
When your project wraps up, just let us know and we'll arrange collection. If you don't require permanent power and simply want the pole removed, we can handle that too.
How much notice do I need to book a pole?
We recommend at least 3–5 business days' notice to lock in your preferred delivery date. For urgent jobs, give us a call and we'll do our best to accommodate.
How much space is needed for delivery?
We need clear access for our truck and room to safely install the pole and stays. Please ensure the area is free of obstructions and underground services are marked.
What happens if we can't install the pole where you prefer?
We'll always try to position the pole where requested. If site conditions prevent it (for example, underground services or limited access), our installers will choose the safest and most practical alternative location.
What is our standard delivery area for temporary builders pole hire?
We deliver across Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Ipswich and surrounding South East Queensland suburbs. Temporary pole hire is $600 + GST for the 12-week minimum. Standard-zone delivery is $350 + GST and quoted separately, making the typical standard-zone total $950 + GST. Delivery outside the standard zone or involving non-standard access is quoted by address and may cost more.
Will the pole be delivered on the exact date I specify?
We do our best to meet your requested date. However, delivery can sometimes be impacted by workload, weather, or site readiness. If your site isn't ready when we arrive, a call-out fee may apply.
Are there any charges from the retailer?
Yes. The retailer will send you bills for electricity usage and may also apply account or connection fees, depending on their terms.
Can there be an unforeseen charge levied by Energex for a 3-phase connection?
Yes. While the standard connection fee applies in most cases, Energex may add extra costs if your job requires additional infrastructure or traffic control.
Can we start the connection process early with Energex?
In some cases, yes. We can lodge paperwork with Energex before the pole is physically installed to speed up the process.
Do you provide the meter box?
Yes. All temporary power poles are supplied with a compliant meter box, RCD (safety switch), outlets, and earthing—ready for Energex connection.
How do I advise the Retailer that I wish to open an account?
Simply contact your chosen retailer, provide the EWR number we lodge with Energex, and request a temporary supply account.
How does power get connected to a temporary power pole in Brisbane?
Getting power flowing is a two-step process handled by two different organisations. Once your pole is installed, we lodge an Electrical Work Request (EWR) with Energex. You'll then need to contact a retailer (like Origin or AGL) using that EWR number to open an account and request a meter install. Energex typically connects the pole to the street mains within 5–10 business days — but that's not when power turns on. Your retailer's meter hanger then attends a few days later to install the meter, and power only starts flowing once that meter is in.
Is there a different procedure for Underground Power Poles?
Yes. Underground connections link into the green Energex pillar on site. The process is slightly different to overhead poles, but we'll guide you through it.
What is a Retailer?
A retailer is the company that manages your electricity account and billing (e.g., Origin, AGL, EnergyAustralia).
What size pole or power capacity do I need?
Standard home builds – usually a 63 amp single-phase pole. Larger builds or on-site living – 80 amp or 3-phase may be required. Commercial or heavy equipment – 3-phase pole recommended. If unsure, check with your builder or electrician and we'll guide you.
When will power actually start flowing at my site?
Power flows only after two separate events are complete. First, Energex connects the pole to the grid (typically 5–10 business days after install). Second, your electricity retailer’s meter provider attends a few days later to install the meter. Energex connecting the pole is not the same as power being live — it’s only live once the retailer’s meter is in. Both steps are outside Poles & Holes’ control, and you’re responsible for opening an account with your retailer (e.g. Origin, AGL, Energy Australia) using the EWR number we provide so they can schedule the meter install.
Which Retailer do I use?
You can choose any electricity retailer, but we recommend Origin or AGL as they tend to process temporary supply connections more smoothly.
Are temporary power poles safe?
Yes. All poles are built to Australian Standards (AS3000, AS3012) and the Queensland Electricity Connection Manual. They're tested and tagged before delivery for compliance and safety.
Do temporary power poles comply with safety standards?
Yes. All our equipment is tested, tagged, and compliant with AS3000, AS3012, and the Queensland Electricity Connection Manual (QECM).
What happens if I think the pole is faulty?
If you suspect a fault, isolate power immediately and call us. We'll send a licensed electrician to inspect and resolve the issue quickly.
What happens if we need to erect scaffold near the pole?
If scaffolding or other structures are planned within the exclusion zone (about 2 m around the pole and stays), Energex Safety Advice must be sought 2–3 weeks beforehand.
Who is responsible for the testing of the Safety Switch after the valid to date on the sticker in the meter box?
Once the initial test period (usually 6 months) has expired, it's the hirer's responsibility to have the safety switch tested and tagged again in line with electrical regulations.
Can I extend the hire if my project isn't finished?
Yes, and how you do it depends on the product. For short-term hires where you've locked in a pick-up date (event portaloos, trailer-mounted toilets), just call us and we'll push the pick-up back — you pay the daily rate for any days beyond the minimum hire period. For long-term hires (temporary power poles, builder's portaloos, permanent poles, security cameras), there's no pre-set pick-up date — the product stays on hire until you call us to off-hire it, so if you need it longer you simply call when you're ready to return it.
Can installing a Builders Temporary Power Pole save you money?
Yes. Using a temporary pole can help avoid costly "supply abolishment" and reconnection fees, which can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars.
Does traffic control cost extra?
Not usually. Energex covers the cost of traffic control when it's required for connection.
How long is the standard hire period?
Our standard hire covers 12 weeks, but extensions can be arranged on a weekly or monthly basis if your project runs longer.
What about jobs on a busy road?
If your site is on or near a high-traffic road, Energex may require traffic control for safety. This can extend the connection timeframe by up to several weeks.
What are your timeline guidelines?
Energex generally connects temporary power poles within 5–10 business days of installation. If your job requires traffic control (for example, on a busy road), the connection may take longer.
What if there is no permanent connection required to a building and you just want to get rid of the pole?
That's no problem—once your project is complete, let us know and we'll arrange for the pole to be disconnected and removed.
