When you hire a temporary power pole for a building site in Brisbane, one of the first decisions you'll make is whether to go with a stayed or stayless pole. Both do the same job — providing metered temporary power for the duration of your build — but they differ in cost, space requirements, and suitability for different site types. Here's how they compare.
What's the Difference?
Stayed poles use metal support stays — tensioned cables anchored to the ground at an angle — to keep the pole upright. The stays spread out from the base of the pole, typically requiring a clear area of about 4 metres in diameter. This is the traditional Queensland TBS (Temporary Builder's Supply) design that's been used on building sites for decades.
Stayless poles are self-supporting. Instead of external stays, the pole is engineered with a heavier base section that keeps it stable without any cables. The footprint is much smaller — just the pole itself and a small concrete footing — making it suitable for tight sites where stays would be impractical.
Side-by-Side Comparison
Here's how the two options compare across the factors that matter most to builders:
Cost: Stayed poles start from $860+GST. Stayless poles start from $960+GST. The $100 difference reflects the heavier engineering in the stayless design.
Space required: Stayed poles need approximately 4m diameter clear space for the stays. Stayless poles only need about 1m — just the pole and its footing.
Trip hazard: Stayed poles create trip hazards from the stay cables (marked with high-vis tape). Stayless poles have no external cables — zero trip hazard.
Installation time: Both types are installed in approximately 2-3 hours. No difference in installation speed.
Energex compliance: Both types are fully compliant with Energex requirements and AS/NZS 3000 wiring standards. No difference in approval process.
Power capacity: Identical. Both provide the same outlets (2x 15A + 1x 10A standard), same amperage options (40A-80A single phase), and same meter box setup.
When to Choose a Stayed Pole
A stayed pole is the right choice when your site has adequate space and you want the most cost-effective option. Specifically:
Your block has a wide street frontage with 4+ metres of clear space near the boundary. The pole area won't be in the way of vehicle access, material deliveries, or excavation work. You're building on a standard residential lot in suburban Brisbane (not inner-city). Budget is a priority and the $100 saving matters for your project.
Stayed poles work perfectly on the majority of Brisbane residential blocks, particularly in outer suburbs and new estates where lots are standard size or larger.
When to Choose a Stayless Pole
A stayless pole is the better choice when space is limited or when the stay cables would create practical problems. Common scenarios:
Tight inner-city blocks in suburbs like Paddington, New Farm, or West End. Narrow street frontage where stays would block the driveway. Sites where the pole needs to be close to the building or boundary. Knockdown-rebuild sites where the demolition and construction zones overlap. Multi-unit developments where multiple trades and vehicles need clear access paths.
The extra $100 for a stayless pole is almost always worth it on tight sites. The practical benefits of having no stay cables — no trip hazards, no restricted areas, no access complications — pay for themselves many times over during a build.
